Something We All Need To Start Doing NOW!
It seems no matter where you look there's something terrible happening. It seems this post could be about ANYTHING really. There's so much we need to start doing to make this world a little better. How could we possibly choice one?! Obviously this isn't the only thing we need to start doing. And there may be some of you who can be good at it, if that's you, then improve even more! We all know we need to be kind. Ellen says it at the end of every show! But I feel there's a lack of this thing in the world: verbalizing compliments.
We all can admit that we see someone and think "I really like her hair!" Or "That guy's shirt is awesome!" Did you regret saying it? You probably just told yourself "That'd be weird. It's a stranger." Or "They wouldn't care if I said it or not anyways." But you don't know what a simple compliment can do for a person. There day could have been going terrible & hearing a simple "You are gorgeous!" Could really make their day & turn it around. To realize we have that power to affect someone's life that like, is a realization I think most of us haven't gotten yet.
A little while ago I decided to try and do my hair on my own. I got backlash from some for it. But I wanted to try it out even if it offended some stylists I'd been going to. I dyed my hair & actually felt really good about how I did it! I couldn't find a stylist who actually did bleaching so it made it hard when I wanted to dye my hair blonde. I was walking through a store & a lady kept staring at me. At first I thought "How rude. She's totally judging me." But then suddenly she came up & said "Oh my gosh! Who dyed your hair?! I love it so much! It looks so good!" I was so flattered. I ACTUALLY BLUSHED! I replied that I'd done it myself. She sat stunned for a few seconds and jokingly said "Can I make an appointment now?!" I explained I wasn't a licensed cosmetologist...so no lol. But that simple comment made me feel validated in my hair skills. I didn't even realize that her saying that would make me feel that way! But it did!
We are around people all day & when we're not, we're on social media LOOKING at people all day. It's crazy that can be on all day & not leave a simple comment that we liked someone's post. Social media gives us the power to positively affect those we don't see every day. We should be taking advantage of that kind of power to do good. We can be spreading cheer by messaging someone we haven't heard from in awhile. Or commenting that we think someone looked cute in their selfie!
Verbalizing compliments is a habit to get into. There have been many times where I wish I'd said that the pregnant woman at church was glowing! Or that that guys tie was super awesome! But let's try doing it to those around us! Lately I've been trying to compliment my husband more. He surprised me and shaved his beard for me b/c I'd asked him to a few weeks ago. And because of that I just can't help telling him how much I love him without a beard(don't get me wrong, I love his beard!). I'm not the best with the people I see the most, my family. But I'm trying to improve to make them know I love them & think they're beautiful people on the inside and out.
Do good today by showing someone you care. That you think highly of them. And that TODAY they are someone you love. If you can't think of something on the outside then compliment them on the inside. Everyone has amazing traits and qualities that we should be celebrating! So let's all try a little harder to speak our loving truth, together!
