Self-Care Time
Let's talk about being mother's and wives, shall we? It's exhausting sometimes. It seems as though you've given your all and still you must give more. There have been days where I have barely slept and yet there's so much I have to do. Some days seem to be a breeze. Then the next day can be completely opposite! What can you do? It sometimes feels like it's just inevitable right? IT IS NOT! Let's dive in!
I am extremely passionate about a lot of things. Garrett thinks it's so funny when I start getting hyped up about things. I am convinced we live in a society where getting excited about something isn't "cool" or it's considered "immature". I have yet to meet someone who is just enthusiastic about life! When I get passionate about something I can't help but feel a huge need to share it with the world! Self-care is one of those things. Why not get passionate about this? I've seen what self-care can do to my exhausted self. Life doesn't seem so hard when I practice self-care. But it can be hard to fit into our busy lives. So where do you start on your path to self-care?
You must first realize how important it is! You need to read about it to come to understand this lost concept. We, as mothers and wives, need moments to ourselves to remember why we love ourselves. What makes us so special, our individuality! If you don't know why self-care is so important, then look it up!
Once you know why it's so important, start by thinking of what YOUR self-care would be. Mine is taking a bubble bath, getting my nails done, shopping, and yummy treats. I'm not one for exercising and rarely care about what I'm eating. So these are things that make me love myself. Taking a bubble bath relaxes me to the extreme! Getting my nails done reminds me how much I love being girlie! Shopping helps me just forget about my stresses for a time. Most of the time my shopping is more window shopping but it still has the same affect! And yummy treats reminds me that I don't have to have a beach body. That indulging in a yummy treat is perfectly acceptable every once in awhile! So find what makes you feel GOOD! It could be working out, eating healthy, attending church, meeting new people, binging Netflix, anything that makes you feel good about yourself.
Now a little warning though. There is a difference between self-care and NUMBING. Do not numb feelings you don't want to feel. Don't remove your mind from problems that need to be taken care of. A numbing activity I have to watch myself with is Netflix. I will watch for hours when I don't want to deal with emotions that are hard. Make sure you walk away feeling good and not just feeling empty! Numbing can be very dangerous! You could lead yourself to a complete breakdown, disconnection to others, and damaged relationships. So be very careful! Okay, back to the matter at hand!
Once you've realized your self-care methods, make time for them! It's so hard, I know! You might be thinking "Whitney! I have so much on my plate, I just cannot fit anything else!" Or "Don't you think I want to take time for me?! I would have already done this!" Well you have to find a way to make time for these things. You WILL be happier. Really sit down and organize your schedule and figure out even a moment for self-care! It could be going on a walk JUST YOU. No kids, spouse, friends, or technology distracting you. Just be present in your moment for yourself.
Which leads me to my final point of advice, be present. Once you are in your self-care time, be there for yourself. We are always helping someone else. Right now it's time to be there for yourself. I'd love to say that it's my husband's responsibility to keep me happy, but it isn't. His job is to make himself happy. Just like me he needs self-care too. So for that moment, be still. Slow down. And be the person for yourself, that your being for everyone else. Talk to yourself. But be nice. You are carrying a heavy load. So tell yourself how strong you are. How much of an impact your having on so many lives. You are amazing.
Self-care will always be something I'm passionate about. For the fact that no one seems to remember it. It's an essential part of being truly happy. So practice it. Sit down and figure out what makes you feel good about yourself. You need to be happy. So find the way to do it. Take control of you. And just be happy to be you. There is NO ONE like you! You are literally one of a kind. And know, I think you're amazing.
